It is one of the capital’s best kept secrets that you can find a working vineyard within a few steps of one of Paris’s most famous tourist attractions. The Basilica de Sacré-Coeur sits astride Montmartre, and the entrance overlooks the whole of Paris – only the Eiffel Tower receives more visitors. However, take a peek around the back of the church and you can’t help but stumble upon the Vignes du Clos Montmartre. The vineyard is usually closed to the public but every year they celebrate the harvest with a wonderful festival known as the Fete des Vendanges. This year the festival takes place between 7-11th October. Visitors can tour the vineyard, sample the wines, attend concerts, enjoy the street theatre, and even attend the closing ball. Tickets are available online but sell out fast as this is one of the capitals most eagerly awaited festivals. If you don’t get tickets to the ball, it is still worth enjoying the free entertainment and unique atmosphere.
