If you love the mountains but fancy a change from the Alps, the Pyrenees in south-west France can offer a great alternative with family-friendly ski resorts.

Avoid the crowds and crazy prices for vin chaud in big-name resorts and look to the spa towns and traditional villages within easy reach from Toulouse or Tarbes airports. For example, in the Pyrenean village of Saint Beat you can get a three-bed chalet style house for less than €200,000. Or check out Superbagneres – a wonderful resort for beginners and children near the beautiful spa town of Luchon – you can get a well-located apartment for €118,000.
